Handle bar Tapes
The best handlebar tape offers the right combination of cushioning, grip and durability to protect your hands and make your riding more comfortable.

Prime Comfort Bar Tape is a great way to add comfort to your road bike, while also improving grip. The tape rolls easily, adheres well in both wet and dry conditions, comes with well-finished tips, and appears to last a long time. The gel back also makes repackaging easier.

The big obstacle with the new handlebar tape is the packaging. Professional mechanics do it in seconds, but I have friends who pay me in beer to do their work… especially stop complaining about poor quality and uneven work.

Wrapping this ribbon is so easy. There’s just the right amount of stretch if you want to be a little skinnier, and for my 40cm round bars, there’s enough length to wrap tightly for added thickness.

Gel backing is great for repairing mistakes because while it adheres well to the bar, it also comes off easily if you notice a gap.

Being grippy is pretty important to me now. After having a hidden pothole in my hand rip out the bars, I became a fan of duct tape again. Luckily, the hardware arrived for testing just when I needed it – my old cassette didn’t tear on impact but it was full of spikes – and I installed it immediately.
That grip is there whether you’re wearing gloves or not, and it even works quite well in wet or sweaty conditions.

Lots of little of extras come with tape. The ends are stretchy and work well, although the printed logo scratches easily. The decorative tape is a fancy-looking knurled material, and the little extra piece that covers the shifter clamp matches the print on the main tape.
One potential problem with these clamping strips is rapid surface wear. I’ve put over a thousand miles on this tape and the surface grips well, even in places where I usually see the tape wear off first.

Value

At just under £20, this is a great price compared to Lizard Skins DSP V2 (link is external) at £34 or Fizik’s Vento MicroTex Tacky Tape(link is external) at £29.99. I wouldn’t say the quality of the bar tips matches the Fizik or Lizard Skins, but these Primes still get the job done.

If you’re looking for an upgrade but are put off by the price of fancy tapes, Prime Comfort Handlebar Tapes are a top contender. It’s thick, clingy, easy to pack, and holds up well.

Verdict

Handlebar tape has good adhesion, is thick, easy to pack and is cheap. There’s a lot to like.
