Scary Mountain Bike Trails

It is common sense for novice riders to steer clear of challenging and hazardous tracks. However, if you are an accomplished mountain biker seeking a rush of excitement, these tough trails are sure to please.

The White Line, U.S.A.

The worst thing is that you have to head vertically down the cliff to get to the track that leads you back. The White Line Trail gets its name from a distinctive scar on this sandstone cliff that mountain bikers must keep to or face a massive fall.

The Death Road, Bolivia

Although Yungas Road, sometimes known as “the death road,” is not officially a bike track, many mountain bikers and ambitious backpackers who want to earn their bragging rights nonetheless put it on their bucket list.

It is easy to see why the route has been dubbed the world’s most dangerous road, with only one brief uphill interruption and 64km of downhill dirt track; yet, its high drops, deadly hairpins, and extremely unstable surface quickly bring you back to reality.

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

Strong winds have been known to sweep people off the rocky edges, but even with slightly foggy heads from one too many pints of Guinness the night before, they managed to avoid falling to their deaths. Would you give it a try? This trail narrows to just four inches wide, with a whopping 600 feet of drop straight down into the North Atlantic.

Radwanderung, Austria

The Radwanderung is an Austrian footpath that follows the incline of the Garnitzenklamm Gorge, with numerous bridges, boardwalks, and exposed singletrack sections.

It appears that from the summit, you can see the Mediterranean, but we would not be able to pull our eyes from the trail ahead of us!

Higher Maritime Alps, France

The south-west Alps are known for their steep, rough terrain to satisfy even the most extreme rider, and mountain biker James McKnight appears to have validated this claim when he rode this trail in the higher Maritime Alps, which seems to take extreme riding to a whole new level.

According to James, several adjectives come to mind when describing the routes in the Higher Maritime: “inaccessible,” “slightly treacherous,” “technically demanding,” and “discreet.”

The Annapurna Circuit, Nepal

The 10th highest peak in the world may be ridden around by riders on steep, snowy roads while taking in breathtaking views.

Portal Trail, U.S.A.

Extremely exposed and technical; signs indicate that riders were killed on the path, most likely by tumbling over the cliff; avoid riding this from the bottom up; instead, utilise it to complete a loop on Poison Spider or Gold Bar Rim; carry a camera; and be alert.

Porcupine Rim

Where: Utah, USA

Extreme factor: The Porcupine Rim appears at first to be like any other advanced technical trail, but once you negotiate the brutally steep rock drops, you will be treated to three miles of terrifying singletrack, frighteningly accompanied by sheer cliffs that plunge into the Colorado River. In addition to the obvious risks to your health, this is the kind of trail that is not kind to bikes, so if you decide to tackle it, be ready for some last-minute bike tricks.

The Ridge

Danny Macaskill: The Ridge

Where: Isle of Skye, Scotland

Extreme factor: The Cuillin Ridgeline, made famous by Danny MacAskill, is a notoriously perilous bike track with sheer drops and rugged terrain that forced even the most prominent trial rider beyond his comfort zone. It is no wonder that only Danny has mastered this legendary ridgeline to date.
